Painting Services Burnaby

Yellow coat of paint was used during this living space renovation in a condo in North Burnaby. We provide interior painting services which can really change the look and feel of your home.
Have you ever walked into somebody’s house or saw a room online somewhere and thought, “Wow, this place looks beautiful and makes me feel so calm”. There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to design but a staple that won’t be going away any time soon is painting. Colors play an essential role in our lives as each individual sees and reacts to colors in a different way. Not just each color but each tone can have a significant impact on our mood which is why painting is such an important aspect to the remodeling of your home.

When you choose the color of paint for your home, how do you want to feel? As an example, we recommend cool tones in the bedroom to give a calm and relaxing feeling. While warmer tones like red and orange would be more appropriate in a room where a boost of energy or adrenaline is needed. It is so important to put some time aside when deciding on what color to pick for painting as it can affect us every day. There’s a reason why fast-food restaurants spend millions of dollars on research to find out what the best color scheme for their interior design. It literally affects our psychological behavior!

By this point, I hope you understand how important it is to spend some time thinking about what color your paint should be. If you wanted to do more research, Google has tons of articles explaining the concepts I mentioned in much more depth. A second thing we need to consider is the quality of the paint that you are using. Paint is one of those things where we definitely recommend not going cheap on. As my grandmother used to say “Paint cheap, paint twice”. With high-quality paint, your coat will withstand the everyday wear and tear of living for much much longer. This can be from painting your walls, kitchen cabinets, hallways, doors, patio, deck, basements, you name it!

Everything that was mentioned above should be considered for both interior and exterior painting. However, there are some extra steps that need to be taken when doing an exterior paint job. When painting the exterior of your home, we make sure that any mold or mildew is properly removed. The surface will be given a full power wash to ensure any coat of paint that is applied will be put on in perfect conditions. If this step isn’t followed, the paint may chip or fade prematurely in which you may have to repaint the surface again.

We hope you have learned the importance of color picking when it comes to painting your home. If you need any help picking, our team at Burnaby Home Renovation Services will be more than happy to help pick out the perfect color of paint for your next project. Why should I paint my home?

There a plethora of reasons that people paint their homes but in reality, you don’t even need a reason to paint. When it comes to giving your home a makeover, painting can be one of the easiest and cost friendly ways to rejuvenate any space. And as long as the paint job is done right, a coat of paint can make your home look bran new. Maybe you’ve never liked the colour of your walls or think they are a little outdated. Or you want your paint to match a new decoration scheme to help modernize the space. A coat of fresh paint can promote a variety of different emotions through colour schemes. The list can go on forever on why you could paint your walls but really, why not?

Can I leave my home while you are painting?
Most of our work occurs during the day while our clients are not home. We make scheduling arrangements to before the start of every project to ensure we are on the same page.

How long will it take to paint my house?
How long a painting job will take typically depends on the scope of the work but compared to other renovation projects (think bathroom, kitchen), your painting project will be a lot shorter. Again this will depend on the surface area we will need to paint but most projects can be completed in under a weeks time.

What is the difference between a low quality and high quality paint?
lower quality counterparts. With better pigments, it is much easier to hide imperfections on the surface which you are painting. Cheap paints use clay and silica pigments which will need more coats to hide old paint and any imperfections on the wall.

Another reason why high quality paint is worth the investment is due to having better resin. Resin acts as the binding agent in paint which helps the afro mentioned pigments hold to surfaces Higher quality resins are smaller which allow it to be penetrated deeper into surfaces. Resins are typically the most expensive part in paint and can be the difference in price between a low quality bucket. In the end, premium paint will stick better while being more durable and longer lasting compared to cheaper paint. Also keep in mind that when you use a cheaper paint, you will usually have to do at least two coats. This is just added labour and time for your painting project. In the long run, you will have to have more frequent paint jobs using cheap paint and ultimately spending more out of your pockets. Trust us on this one, it’s a few extra dollar now for a whole lot more savings in the future.

What paint finish do I need for my project?
Most people think their job is finished after they have picked the perfect colour for their interior painting project but there another step that gets commonly overlooked. The type of finish you use! Paint sheen (or finish) can drastically change how the colour you picked will actually look and interact with your room. We go into a bit more detail on each type of finish and our recommendation on where they belong.
Flat Paint
Flat paint is a finish that does not reflect light which results in no sheen. Because of the lack of reflection, it allows more paint pigment to come through and is much more forgiving with flaws. It has the ability to hide imperfections and allows for an easy flawless finish. Use some caution if you are considering flat paint in a high traffic area. Stains are much harder to remove from low sheen paint and constant cleaning or rubbing can cause marring.

Matte Paint
A matte finish is just about as shine-free as flat and provides excellent depth of colour with slightly more durability. Matte paint is a professional painters favorite due to its ease of use and smooth touch after drying. It can withstand a bit more frequent washing compared to flat paints and can be used in busier areas of the home.
Where to use: Both flat and matte paint help with imperfections on your surface but other finishes generally perform better when it comes to stains. These paints are usually best for bedrooms, ceilings, living rooms, and any other place where you don’t need to worry about wear and tear.

Eggshell Paint
Eggshell finish has become a cornerstone finish for professionals and DIY painters. It has a lower sheen like flat and matte but this finish casts a soft glow and shows colour beautifully. Don’t let the name eggshell make you think this finish is not durable either. Eggshell is a great choice for any of your most loved areas.

Satin Paint
Satin commonly gets confused with other finishes but doesn’t deserve to be. The difference between satin and eggshell is that satin offers a higher gloss while being more durable and stain resistant. A satin finish is ideal for areas in your home that you would like to highlight. Similar to eggshell, satin does not hide imperfections as well as lower sheen paints like flat and matte. It is imperative to make sure your wall is prepped accordingly (best left to the professionals) before applying less forgiving paint finishes.

Where to use: Eggshell and satin finishes work best for bedrooms, family rooms, hallways, and living spaces. As Satin is a little more tougher than eggshell, it can be used in the dining area, children’s rooms, bathrooms, and even the kitchen. Satin finishes can even be tough enough to use on trim as well.

Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss paint gives off a luminous shine and is perfect for areas of your home that you would like to highlight. With this finish, you are able to really see the intricacies in the architectural details of your home and create dimension on doors and trims. Kitchen cabinets are one of the best recipients for this finish as well.

Where to use: Semi-gloss is best used on doors, windows and trim. If you enjoy the shiny look, children’s rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms are also good options. Same as with Satin paint, it is imperative that that your walls are smooth and free of any surface imperfections or debris before you start painting (We recommend leaving this to the professionals).

We’ve listed some common paint finishes and where in your home to best use these finishes. You may notice at the paint shop that there are some finish names that you do not recognize but not to fret, those finishes are usually hybrids or in-between finishes from the list above.

How often should I get an interior paint job done?
There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration as each home can be different when it comes to how individuals interact with their walls. A good quality paint job should last you anywhere from 5-8 years before you have to think about a new interior painting project. It’s possible to get away with a few more years but that may come down to personal preference on the looks of one’s home. Kids or pets may accelerate the timeline given above as walls can become a battleground of sort for those playing.

How often should I get an exterior paint job done?
For exterior areas, one of the biggest factors will be how much sun and water exposure a particular area receives. Typically an exterior paint job should be done every 5-7 years to help protect the outer surface of your home. Areas with increased exposure to the elements and high traffic areas may require more frequent attention compared to the timeline given above.

What’s the right colour for my home?
Choosing a paint colour can be a fun activity for some but a daunting task for others. It is definitely something that you should spend time on as colour is one of the most powerful visual cues and can impact our mood and emotions. We’ve compiled some tips for you so you can have a starting point to choose what colour you would like for your paint job.

Your Favorite Colour! - A great starting point to choosing a colour can be started by using your favorite colours. It can be a fun exercise to create a colour scheme with the colours you like and to not be confined by traditional colour schemes for a particular design style. While your favorite colour might not suit the exact area you are looking to paint, you may have discovered a colour combination to work that colour in on an accent wall. We just want to make sure our clients don’t feel like they have to follow a certain way to do something and this exercise helps get the creative juices flowing.

Finding Inspiration – There is a plethora of different avenues to choose from online to find inspiration for design and colours schemes. Magazines and catalogs used to be the go to for finding decorating inspiration but online channels are more commonly used now a days. Retailer sites or painting sites usually display the colours they use in their photos and can be a great way visualize how these colours can interact with the setting of the room. Instagram and Pinterest are other channels where you can find inspiration on the daily. New content is always being created and you can see how modern trends integrate colour and design into their styles. If you search “interior design” on either of these platforms, you will be given almost unlimited content to work with for your inspiration.

Colour Theory – You don’t need to be an expert in colour theory to get some great ideas from the colour wheel. By doing some exploring on a colour wheel (there are many free tools online for this), you’ll get some ideas on the types of colours that go well with each other. Don’t fret, you probably won’t be using the exact colours schemes that a colour wheel gives you. Most of the time, a shade given in a colour scheme will work best for a given room. What we would recommend is reading a quick 101 article on colour theory and then start playing with the colour wheel. That way you’ll have a few basic concepts nailed down and you’ll be able to own the wheel.

Neutral Paint Colors – If you are a fan of neutral paint colours but want to add some creativity to your space then read on! You can add some impact to your space even with a neutral colour scheme by getting creative with how these colours are used. A neutral colored wall with pastel ceilings is a great way to add colour to space with losing the calm and soothing vibe you’ve created. Another thing you can add is a striped wall in neutral colours. This is a great way to add some style while still keeping the vibe of the room calm.

Matching Colours With Fabrics – If you already have furniture and decorations that you intend on keeping, matching your walls with these items can be an easy way to decide your interior paint colour. Gather your pillows, beddings, table linens, and curtains to start matching some colours. An accent wall can look great matching the boldest colour in your prints. A really subtle design can be choosing a colour from the small details of your fabric. It doesn’t jump out at you as much but it can create a very complete feeling where everything just feels right. It’s a great little conversation piece too if someone ever compliments the feel and vibe of your space.

Look Out Your Window – Using the outdoors for inspiration is a popular way to develop a colour scheme. Exterior inspired colour schemes are commonly used for spaces in the home where you want to create a relaxed and restful atmosphere. Think the calming green from a meadow or the relaxing blue of an ocean. It is important to test these colours during the night and day to get a realistic view of what these colours will look like in your space. Green can be a tricky colour to work with as they can be both a warm and cool colour for interior purposes. Just make sure that the room you are intending to paint green is given the appropriate temperature for the setting of the space and you should have no issues.

Use Your Art! – A little industry secret from interior designer’s is to choose or match colours from pieces of art in your home. Majority of artists have an excellent eye for colour and light and are able to create beautiful colour schemes. As they’ve done the hard work for you, you can choose similar colour scheme or find complementary colours to match the artwork you have.

Try Out Shades – Sometimes you think you’ve found the perfect colour or created a masterpiece colour scheme but it just doesn’t seem to work with your space. Before you give up on the perfect colour you’ve found, consider darker or lighter shades of that same colour. A different shade of the colour you picked out might just be the little change you needed for things to look perfect.

Sample At Home – One exercise that we always do with our clients is to sample the paint on the wall you are considering to paint before committing to any colour. Our team will be putting in hours of labour and using liters of paint for your project so we need to make sure we get the colour right. Colours tend to be slightly off when viewed on a computer/phone screen or print and you will never truly see the colour without testing it on a wall with your own eyes. We recommend bringing back a few samples to see which colour is the perfect match for the wall and its surroundings.

Colour Flow – If you want to give the illusion of a larger space, having paint colour flow through rooms can give the impression of a larger space. Flowing paint can also help create a calming vibe due to the continuity that the paint creates. We recommend picking a neutral paint colour that will be your signature hue for your home. Each room can have different accent colours but having that continuity will create a stunning effect on your home. Another tip to match colour flow would be to keep flooring similar between rooms and having moulding to tie it all together.

Paint Colour Apps – Using a paint colour app can be one of the easiest ways to choose a paint colour or to create a colour scheme. These apps have come a long way and some of them are as simple as taking a photo of a colour and then letting the app do its work (your camera/phone will have to be able to “read” the colour for these apps to work). While it won’t be an exact match, these apps can create colour palettes and schemes for you to work with.
