How long will my kitchen renovation take?
As with any type of renovation project, this will depend on some different factors. Some of these factors include the arrival of materials on time, the size of the project itself, and the scope of the project. While every kitchen renovation is unique, most of the tasks involved are similar. Where project time tend to have to be extended is when complications with structural integrity or unforeseen electrical or plumbing issues come up.
The following is a mock renovation for illustration purposes only. Your kitchen renovation may have a completely different timeframe.
  • Establish design and get a proposal – 1 week
  • Finalize the project scope and size and select all of the materials for the project – 1-4 weeks
  • Renovation materials are ordered and delivered – 4-8 weeks
  • Demolition of current kitchen materials and appliances – 1 week
  • Installation of new appliances, flooring, materials, electrical and plumbing work, and painting – 1-2 weeks
  • Final touches and site clean up – 1-2 weeks

Will I get a return on my investment from having work done on my kitchen?
Generally we see an average value increase between 80-97% for work done on a kitchen. In metropolitan areas this can jump up to the 130-140% range as well. However these numbers given depend on the scope of the project and whether the upgrade involved moderate or higher quality materials and appliances for the renovation. As one could imagine, a cheap reno won’t as add much value to a remodel done with high quality materials.

What part of my kitchen should I make the biggest investment in?
While you may spend a decent chunk of your budge on appliances, the largest portion of your money should go towards cabinets. Cabinets make up the majority of the space in the kitchen and quality craftsmanship can be pricey. Kitchen countertops and the flooring are other areas where it you could put a larger portion of your budget to.

How much will it cost to remodel/renovate my kitchen?
Just like it depends on how long a kitchen renovation takes, the cost will depend on the scope and size of your project. A standard remodel with cabinet replacements will cost a lot less than a complete overhaul with new cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting fixtures, and a backsplash. A good rule of thumb the industry goes by is that a full kitchen renovation should be estimated at around 10-15% of your property value. That’s not to say it wont cost more or less but that can be a good starting to point for a budget.

What type of design should I have for my kitchen?
This is definitely the most fun part of our job is seeing what type of creative designs you come up with. We will definitely help out with any design questions you may have but this is your chance for your creativity to show. The following are some design styles that you can search in google to make your search a little bit easier:

Country Farmhouse – This style is open and inviting and makes it feel like you are having a weekend getaway right in your own home. Furniture-like cabinetry and farmhouse tables are popular choices with a diverse mix of finished to make a comfortable homey look. Country color range from yellow, red, blue to aged tones of cream. For country style, mixing instead of matching is the way to do it.

Modern – Sleek and sophisticated, a modern style kitchen is designed to be clean to the eye while keeping clutter to an absolute minimum. Hight tech materials and reflective surfaces are key to modern kitchens while high quality exotic woods can add the extra little touch of luxury without changing the feel of the space. If you’re wanting to add a bit of classic feel to the space, having mid-century seating can change the style to a bit more of a mid-century modern look (our personal favorite).

Cottage Kitchens – Regardless if your kitchen space is big or small, cottage styles are made to feel nice and cozy. With a homey touch and imperfect finishes and fixtures, this design style is perfect for antique collectibles and art. If you love finding treasure at your local flea market, this design style will be the perfect complement for you as you are able to showcase your latest findings.

Contemporary – The look of a contemporary kitchen is a careful mix of new and old materials. The feel is causal yet polished with the perfect blend of function and hominess. The kitchens of today are designed to have plenty of room to hosts dinners and to have the space to interact with guests. A contemporary kitchen design is perfectly suited for modern day living.

French Country – Picture a petite hotel in southern France, what do you see? I see space dappled with the color of sunlight. The space has the aura of pure romance and the surfaces are elegantly worn. To create a Mediterranean vibe, look for fabrics rich in tones of cobalt, ochre, and russet. To really push the feel over the edge, warmer-toned wooden cabinetry with ceramic accessories throughout the kitchen.

This list is just a few examples of the type of kitchen you can have for your renovation. Get some inspiration online to find the perfect kitchen design for you.

What type of features should I add for my new kitchen?
This is another opportunity to let your imagination run free but here is a list of features that should have consideration:
  • New kitchen countertops
  • New kitchen cabinets
  • Lighting
  • Kitchen Island
  • Windows (For natural lighting)
  • Storage Space
During the design phase of the renovation, we will go over any requests you will have along with any recommendations for features and fixtures.

Should I get a kitchen backsplash?
A kitchen backsplash can be helpful as it provides added protection from water and moisture damage as well as from any grease. On top of the protection it provides, it can add a great design element to the kitchen as well. Backsplashes are usually installed behind a cooking are and/or the sink.

What is this kitchen work triangle I’ve seen mentioned online?
The kitchen work triangle refers to your cooking area, fridge, and sink. These three points make the corners of a triangle and essentially you should have easy and fluid movement in this area. There shouldn’t be too much distance between the corners and this concept is used to create a more efficient kitchen space.

What is the difference between a normal kitchen and a chef’s kitchen?
There is no fancy difference between the two but a chef’s kitchen is designed for individuals who frequently prepare large meals and need a design that allows for heavy duty cooking. It’s essentially a kitchen that should be efficient, have surfaces that are easy to clean, and be storage savvy.

What material should I use for the floor of my kitchen?
The type of material you use for your kitchen renovation is essential as it can dictate the materials you use for the rest of the kitchen. Here are a few options for you to consider and as always, google is you best friend if you need any inspiration.

Hardwood – By its nature, hardwood is a durable flooring material for most areas of your home but its not quite a kitchen favorite as any area that is susceptible to moisture build up is not an ideal situation for wood. But thanks to modern sealers and polyurethane finishes, it makes hardwood much more durable and long lasting. Even with these additions, hardwood is more susceptible to problems with moisture and stains compared to other materials. If you do like aged look of a used hardwood floor and see personality instead of defects, it can be a great addition to any kitchen. Remember, you always have the option of sanding or refinishing a hardwood floor to give it a fresh look again.

Bamboo – While having a similar look and feel to hardwood, bamboo is actually quite a bit harder than hardwood and due to its manufacturing process, it is much more resistant to moisture build up and water damage. This has made it a much more popular choice for kitchens as it is significantly more durable than wood. The few cons of bamboo is that it is usually more expensive than hardwood and cannot be refinished like wood as there is no natural grain direction. Refinishing is possible but that’s a job that you should leave to a professional.

Ceramic Tile – Ceramic tiles (which includes porcelain) is a great choice as it is resistant to heat, and can last for a long time with little change to its appearance. Its material is made from natural clay which is than shaped and fired under heat to create a very durable material that is resistant to water and stains. Ceramics can also come in numerous colors and patterns which give you a plethora of design options. The problem with ceramic tiles is that it can be too cold and some people find the tiles to be too hard. These issues can be addressed with a radiant heating system installed under the tiles or a rug to soften the floor.

Concrete – An inexpensive and long lasting option for those with a ground level kitchen. In some cases, you’ll be lucky to find that a concrete slab will already be located beneath the existing floor coverage. Concrete can be stained and polished in many different way to make it an attractive and stylish flooring to your kitchen. If there is no existing concrete slab available, a new pour can be done over many subfloor surfaces. This type of flooring is an essential for modern style kitchens. The drawbacks of concrete are similar to ceramic tiles in that they can be somewhat cold and hard for some people. The other drawback is that other people may no share the same style taste of a concrete kitchen and this could pose some issues if you’re looking to sell your home in the future.

Natural Stone Tile – Natural stone tiles are durable and long lasting material for you kitchen floor. Natural stone tiles have a wide variety to choose which can help open up your design repertoire. Flooring options include, granite, marble limestone, slate, travertine and sandstone. Stone tiles can make for a luxurious floor, particularly granite and marble have an veining that creates a unique appearance.  The drawback to stone tiles is that it is susceptible to liquid stains and water damage which can be a common occurrence in the kitchen. However a quality penetrating stone sealer can help alleviate this issues as it adds an invisible coat of protection over the tiles preventing the previously mentioned issues. This sealer will need to be reapplied regularly to protect the tiles. There is a bit of further research you will need to do as different material types of have properties of hardness, scratch resistance, and durability.

Vinyl – Vinyl is one of the most versatile materials for kitchen floors and is nearly impervious to water issues and stains. All the cleaning that is requires is sweeping, vacuuming or mopping. It is among the most inexpensive flooring materials and commonly used in DIY kitchen renovations. It is an easy choice type material and one that will have to be replaced every decade or so as it starts to fade in the latter years. More recently, a luxury version of vinyl has appeared on the market which is commonly known as luxury vinyl flooring (LVF). It is a high quality flooring material that can mimic wood and even stone in pretty convincing ways. Older forms of vinyl have a reputation for being “cheap” and cost friendly but by know means is LVF low quality. It can now be found in many high-end luxury homes.
